A Few Halloween Costume Ideas

Updated on December 28, 2011

Halloween is just around the corner. If you’re stumped for costume ideas, look no further! Looking great on Halloween does not have to cost an arm and a leg. Most costumes can be made from things you already have at home.

I will probably add more here as I think about more costume ideas. :)

Dead Bride

This is a popular Halloween costume. It embodies every aspect so many girls love; makeup, jewelry, beautiful dresses and awesome hairstyles.

Instead of slashed wrists and wrecked clothes, try a more genteel approach. Try for pale skin, shadowed eyes and tousled hair. For shading, avoid black makeup. Instead, try using blue tones—remember to blend the shadows into the pale face powder. Truly haunting costumes are often old fashioned. Long trailing dresses made of lace, satin and cotton create a lasting, visual impact.

Purchase affordable wedding dresses at thrift stores, online retailers or recycle one you already have. There is no need to ruin the dress for future use. If you keep it, clean the wedding dress and pack it away for another Halloween, or someone’s real wedding.

The American Flag Halloween Costume

Here is one for the spirit filled. Show your American spirit for the good ol’ USA by wrapping The American Flag around yourself, toga style. If you want to show Old Glory in all of her of her glory, try making a three-person costume. Use Velcro to stretch out and tack The American Flag to your shirts. I suggest you practice walking in this before you leave the house! If you feel this is defacing the flag, maybe you should stick to a sheet with eyeholes. To show true spirit, I suggest purchasing a flag that was actually made in the USA. ;-)

Dress up As Your Favorite Charity

Slap on a sign and a collection box. Instead of asking for candy, try for pocket change and other charitable donations. You can make your own personal shirts with your charities logo. If you go trick or treating as a group it may make people feel more at ease with handing over their money. Be prepared to explain what you are though! Have a good speech planned and remember to smile!
